Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church
Completed in 1974, the Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church (MCMBC) was designed by Alonzo Robinson, Jr., Wisconsin’s first licensed African American architect. The building continues to serve its original congregation and the greater community in which it is located. In 2024, the Church was awarded a Grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation (the Trust), as a part of the Trust's African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund - Preserving Black Churches program. The grant was awarded to fund a Historic Structures Report of the Church.
Shortly after being awarded the grant, the Church leadership selected ARG to complete the HSR. The ARG team conducted research to identify the building’s history and significance, and completed on-site investigations and condition assessments to document and evaluate the building’s existing conditions. ARG then compiled the report, providing treatment and work recommendations, categorized by level of priority, and accompanied with a cost estimate, to help the church plan for their long-term rehabilitation, maintenance and overall stewardship goals for their building.
ARG helped the Church secure a second capital grant from the Trust, which will fund a Phase 1 rehabilitation project. ARG is currently in the Construction Documents Design phase of the rehabilitation project.
