Santa Barbara County Courthouse

Completed in 1929 the Santa Barbara County Courthouse, now recognized as a National Landmark, was designed in the Spanish Colonial Revival style, and envisioned as a civic center and cornerstone for the creation of Santa Barbara as an idyllic Spanish city.
The building layout, detailing, and interior design reflect a romantic fortress aesthetic, complemented by Moorish ornamentation and rural Andalusian massing and asymmetry. ARG has performed a condition assessment of the buildings of the courthouse complex, a Historic Structure Report, and has undertaken a multi-year rehabilitation project beginning in 2020.
The firm’s scope of work to date has encompassed a complete reroof using the original historic tile and a new anchorage system. A small percentage of new tile was incorporated to match the original material. Concrete spalls at the roof deck were repaired and the project team created a new concealed underlayment system and self-adhering sheet membrane flashing with copper flashing details to match the original flashing, including internal gutters.

The firm lead the design team for exterior envelope repairs, window repairs, fixing spalls and cracks, repair of damaged concrete balconies, and refinishing of wrought iron decorative elements, window grilles and railings.
Construction of Phases 1 & 2 are complete, and planning is underway for Phase 3. The project has benefited from a phased approach as the ARG team has been able to plan for asbestos mitigation and repair cast stone areas that were not accessible until construction started.
