InterContinental Mark Hopkins Hotel

Evening entrance view of the Intercontinental Mark Hopkins Hotel

One of four grand old hotels remaining in the city, the Mark Hopkins Hotel is located at the top of Nob Hill. The 19-story hotel, constructed in 1926 of steel encased in concrete and faced with brick and decorative terra cotta, is an example of the palace hotel architecture of the early twentieth century.

ARG provided design and conservation services for several projects at the hotel, including the
rehabilitation and replacement of existing wood windows, replacement of the tower roof, treatment of
decorative sheet metal, and repair of terra cotta, brickwork, and decorative concrete.

Additionally, ARG oversaw the rehabilitation and addition of new design features for the hotel’s portecochere and the cast iron canopy. The upgrade to the cast iron entrance canopy provides a feature for
hotel branding that is clearly contemporary but sympathetic to the original design.

On the interior, we upgraded the carpet, drapes, wall coverings, and sconces to the Hotel Ballroom and
Room of the Dons with murals by Manyard Dixon.
