African Americans in California Multiple Property Documentation Forms

In August 2022, ARG contracted with the Office of Historic Preservation (OHP) to complete a Multiple Property Documentation Form (MPDF) related to African Americans in California. The MPDF traces the history of the African American community in California in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It can be used to evaluate and nominate properties associated with African Americans in the state.
The MDPF built off Five Views: An Ethnic Historic Site Survey for California, a statewide survey of properties associated with ethnic communities in California that was published in 1988. The document built on existing scholarship on African American communities in urban areas such as Los Angeles and San Francisco, while also expanding discussions of communities in rural areas such as the Central Valley and far northern California.

The ARG project team worked with subconsultants and an OHP-appointed Advisory Committee to complete the document. Project Manager Elysha Paluszek oversaw the completion of the document and was a contributor to various themes in the historic context statement. Project team members Andrew Goodrich, Mary Ringhoff, Stacy Farr, Caitlyn Ewers, and Morgan Quirk authored portions of the historic context statement, and Principal Katie Horak provided quality assurance and quality control.
