Docomomo U.S. Awards Announcement

The Furnace Creek Visitor Center at Death Valley National Park was presented with the Design Award of Excellence, and the website Curating the City: Modern Architecture in LA (Encounter Restaurant at LAX) won the Survey Award of Excellence. The Modernism in America Awards celebrate the documentation, preservation, and reuse of modern buildings, structures, and landscapes built in the United States or on U.S. territory.

The Furnace Creek Visitor Center at Death Valley National Park, built in 1959, is one of the most prominent examples of early modernist architecture created under the National Park Service’s “Mission 66” program in California. ARG served as the architects for this preservation project, which was commended by the jury for the sensitive restoration, adaptation, and expansion that allows its continued productive use.

ARG was responsible for content on the website Curating the City: Modern Architecture in LA (www.laconservancy.org/modern), which documents more than 300 historically significant Modern sites in Los Angeles County. In the jury’s comments, it noted the thoughtful work, innovative technology, preservation talent, historical knowledge, and web design talent that went into making a large amount of information easily available to the public through exceptional visual quality and organization.
